Everytown Law and GIFFORDS Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence have shared a first-of-its-kind online tracker documenting more than ten years of lawsuits filed against gun-industry defendants. The tool aims to give survivors and litigators a roadmap to navigate the legal protections that Congress has given the gun industry.
The database follows lawsuits nationwide in which at least one defendant is a ‘firearms industry actor’—defined as an individual or entity engaged in the manufacture, sale, distribution, or marketing of firearms or firearm-related accessories. By tracking cases dating back to 2015, the database is intended to serve as a resource for survivors, litigators, policymakers, researchers, journalists, and gun violence prevention organizations looking to understand the scope of litigation seeking to hold gun industry members accountable for unlawful or reckless actions.
One such ongoing lawsuit is Getz v. Sturm, Ruger & Company, Inc., filed by Nathaniel Getz (son of victim Suzanne Fountain) against Sturm, Ruger & Co. over the March 22, 2021, mass shooting at the King Soopers store in Boulder. The suit targets the manufacturer’s marketing and design of the Ruger AR-556 pistol used in the attack.
