Evergreen High School Parents React to GA Verdict

The Georgia conviction of an alleged shooter’s father this week frustrates some Evergreen High School parents, who, nearly six months after the shootings there, say they are still searching for answers. Some parents say the bare investigative summary released by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office has done little to satisfy them, and have requested the disclosure of all unreleased investigative records.

Last month, the sheriff’s office announced its investigation was closed and released a short summary of the findings, including that the shooter’s parents would not be charged.

Among the questions parents say they want answered are how the shooter accessed a gun stored in a locked safe belonging to his parents, who declined to cooperate with investigators; how the shooter was ‘radicalized,’ per the sheriff’s office, and what the motive for the shooting was; and why an FBI tip about the shooter received months before the attack was never passed along to Colorado law enforcement until after the shooting.

Cindy Mazeika, President of Evergreen High School PTSA, shared the following message with Fox31 News:

“Up here in Evergreen, we have many frustrations that [the shooter’s] parents were not held accountable. Specifically, it seems like a slap in the face that the investigation can be closed with ‘We aren’t sure how [the shooter] got the gun and bullets, it was locked in the safe… maybe he got it while I (the dad) was cleaning my guns.’ Case closed?? No accountability? How about investigating how he got the gun, put it in his backpack, rode the bus to school and sat next to my daughter in 1st period with a revolver in his backpack, then later shooting up the school, injuring and traumatizing our community.”

Ceasefire last week issued a press release offering secure storage tips, resources, and information on how to get our FREE secure storage training.
