Eileen with Phil Weiser and Annemarie Jensen
f you missed Eileen McCarron’s retirement party Oct. 23, you missed a good one. It was an evening filled with speeches, memories and gratitude for her nearly 30 years of work for gun violence prevention.
Around 100 attendees heard speakers including (now) Colorado Governor-elect Phil Weiser, Senate President James Coleman, Boulder District Attorney Michael Dougherty, and others. Eileen was thanked for her tireless efforts and stubborn persistence as she carried on the fight for common-sense gun laws in Colorado. More than one official said that when they were first elected, Eileen would approach them, introduce herself, and warn that they would be hearing from her—a lot.

Eileen with Colorado Senate Preseident James Coleman (and a plaque of recognition); Offering her thoughts on Ceasefire’s future.
Eileen also highlighted Colorado Ceasefire’s history: We began as a Political Action Committee to elect gun-reform candidates, then added a Legislative Action branch to lobby for specific bills, and finally an Outreach arm to educate and inform the public about gun violence prevention. She recalled late nights, hallway conferences, and endless committee testimony. She thanked the people—supporters, volunteers, and legislators—who have made it possible for Colorado to become a national leader in gun violence prevention.
Eileen introduced the new co-chairs of the Legislative Action Board, Cooper Dayton and Lydia Waligorksi. We’ll introduce them more in our next newsletter. She said she feels that she is leaving Colorado Ceasefire in good hands, with much accomplished but much more still to do.
