Gun Bills Make their Way Through 2025 Legislature

Two new gun bills are in front of committees soon, others have been introduced, and Colorado Ceasefire is asking you to let your legislators know how you’d like them to vote.

HB25-1133 Requirements for Sale of Firearms Ammunition (Reps. Monica Duran and Lindsay Gilchrist, Sen. Kyle Mullica) requires that ammunition sold at retail must be accessible to a purchaser only through the assistance of a vendor, such as from behind the counter or in a display case. Additionally, it prohibits the sale of ammunition to anyone under the age of 21. The bill has requirements for shipping to ensure that the delivery is anticipated and received by someone 21 or over.

This bill will be heard by the House Business and Labor Affairs Committee on Thur., Feb. 13 at 1:30 p.m.

Please contact members of the Committee to encourage them to vote YES on HB1133. You can either use this convenient form (pass it on!) or call.

The other new bill, HB25-1062 Penalty for Theft of Firearms (Reps. Ryan Armagost and Monica Duran, Sen. Nick Hinrichsen), makes the theft of a firearm a felony. Under current law, the penalty for theft is based on the value of the item, therefore the theft of a gun is treated just like any other object: a lamp, a television, a bicycle. The penalty for theft of a gun less than $300 is a petty offense (maximum 10 days in county jail and/or $300 fine).

Obviously, a stolen gun offers far more danger to the community than a stolen television. Stolen guns are generally headed directly to the criminal and youth market. The District Attorneys of Colorado voted unanimously to support HB1062.

This bill will be heard by the House Judiciary Committee on Tues. Feb. 18. Please contact members of the Committee—especially if you live in one of their districts, like HD52 (Larimer) or HD4 (Denver)—to encourage them to vote YES on HB1062. You can either use this convenient form (pass it on!) or call.

The most-watched gun bill of the session—SB25-003 Semiautomatic Firearms & Rapid-Fire Devices— passed its committee vote but has stalled as negotiations continue before a vote by the full Senate.

Several other bills—good and bad— are pending. You can catch up on the status of all this session’s firearm-related bills, as well as some federal bills of interest, at ColoradoCeasefire.org.
