3D Printing Bill Backers Remove Instruction Provision

Faced with the threat of a veto by Gov. Jared Polis, sponsors of HB26-1144, Prohibit Three-Dimensional Printing Firearms & Components, removed a provision that would have prohibited the distribution of digital instructions on how to make the weapons.

The bill’s sponsors said they were told making the change was necessary to avoid a veto from Polis. Although Polis has not said publicly why he opposed the provision, critics of the ban on instruction distribution said it would have limited access to information and infringed on First Amendment rights.

“This amended bill is what the governor tells us he will sign into law,” state Sen. Tom Sullivan, a Centennial Democrat and lead sponsor of the measure, told The Colorado Sun.
The bill’s main sponsors are Reps. Lindsay Gilchrist and Andrew Boesenecker and Sens. Tom Sullivan and Katie Wallace.
