Great piece from National Public Radio about gun violence in America—including political gun violence. The good news: gun homicides overall are down since the pandemic, but school shootings and political violence are both up. As always, suicide is the leading cause of gun deaths in the U.S., and most mass-shooting incidents stem from a domestic-violence situation.
The piece also cites a troubling study from KFF, a health research group, finding that 1 in 5 respondents said they have personally been threatened with a gun, while nearly 1 in 6 said they have personally witnessed a person get shot. Worries about gun violence also affected Black and Hispanic respondents disproportionately.
Of the survey participants who have a gun in their home, nearly half said a firearm was stored in an unlocked location and more than one-third said a gun was stored loaded. More than half said at least one gun is stored in the same location as the ammunition. Those results suggest the need for more efforts to teach the public about safe gun storage practices, according to the authors.
