An Arrowhead Elementary School mother was issued a summons for child abuse and failing to secure a firearm after a gun was found in a student’s backpack March 28, prompting a brief lockdown.
The mother was identified by APD as Zoe Cherelle Cantrelle. Her child was showing the loaded firearm to friends when another student notified a teacher, prompting the lockdown. Cantrelle was charged with misdemeanor child abuse and failure to secure a firearm. Police said there was no indication that the student had any intention of harming anybody.
Charges for failing to secure firearms remain relatively rare in Colorado, but are becoming more common.
