With the avalanche of ads, it’s been impossible to miss that next week’s election will have tremendous ramifications for both our state and our nation. With that in mind, Colorado Ceasefire PAC is sharing its endorsements among Colorado’s office seekers and one ballot measure.
With more than 40 laws on the books, Colorado is recognized as a national gun violence prevention leader. There is no secret how this has happened: Given our state’s history with horrific gun violence, Coloradans recognize the importance of electing candidates who support common sense gun laws. In fact, Colorado Ceasefire began 26 years ago as a Political Action Committee (PAC) to change the makeup of the legislature. Since then, we have highlighted candidates and issues for our followers that we believe will make our state safer from gun violence.
First, Colorado Ceasefire usually doesn’t recommend non-gun-violence-related measures, but in this case we feel it is important for our friends and allies to know we are urging a NO vote on ballot initiative Amendment 83.
This proposed constitutional amendment would add a constitutional ‘right’ to hunt, fish and trap into our state’s Constitution. That may seem straightforward, but its true intent and impact are far more complex.
Critically, Amendment 83 would impose a much-heightened judicial review requirement on any gun violence prevention or gun safety laws that could possibly be argued to impact hunting rights. While state statutes can be amended or revised fairly easily in response to changing conditions or societal developments, a Constitutional Amendment would be very difficult to overcome and could even endanger the laws we have fought so hard to pass already.
Hunting and fishing are already legal in Colorado and carefully regulated under existing state and federal laws.
Amendment 83 is funded by wealthy out-of-state special interests with a national agenda. Amendment 83 is only the latest in a long line of similar measures promoted around the country by the National Rifle Association (NRA), Safari Club International, the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation, and the International Order of T. Roosevelt. Here in Colorado, the conservative dark-money group Advance Colorado is deeply tied to Amendment 83’s infrastructure.
Additionally, in May, Colorado Ceasefire PAC announced its endorsements of Phil Weiser for Governor and Jeff Bridges for State Treasurer. Phil Weiser is currently our state’s Attorney General and has assisted Colorado Ceasefire in a number of ways, including working to enact several gun violence prevention laws. Prominent among those laws is the Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPO) law, which AG Weiser not only supported but has also taken major steps to implement. Weiser has also successfully defended in court both the ERPO law and the large-capacity magazine ban.
Although the office of Treasurer is only tangentially related to gun violence prevention, Senator Jeff Bridges was a strong supporter of common-sense gun laws in his tenures in both the House and Senate. Throughout his career, not only did he vote with us 100% of the time, he was a prime sponsor of critical legislation.
