Legislature: Lobby Day draws 100, Anti-ERPO Bill Killed

Gun violence prevention groups across the state gathered on Feb. 26 to advocate for gun reform. More than 100 people, including dozens of students, joined Ceasefire and other groups to learn about the bills being considered this year. Advocates then went to the state Capitol, where we scheduled more than 30 meetings with state legislators to encourage their support. Speakers included attorneys, lobbyists, and legislative staffers who explained the legislative process, the legal rationale for some new bills, and the overall gun violence prevention legislative strategy. Thank you to everyone who worked on and attended this event, and we’ll see you next year!

In other legislative news, several Ceasefire-supported bills are moving forward, including SB26-004, Expand List of Petitioners for ERPO; SB26-011, Social Media Search Warrants; and HB26-1144, Prohibit Three-Dimensional Printing Firearms & Components.

An important win was the PI (postponed indefinitely, or dead for the year) of HB26-1072, Firearm Possession and Elimination of ERPO, which would have codified ‘an individual’s right to possess and use firearms to the maximum extent permissible under state and federal constitutions,’ including repealing Colorado’s Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO) law. It joins HB26-1021, Second Amendment Protection Act, which would have repealed every gun violence prevention law enacted in Colorado since 2013, on the list of bills defeated by GVP advocates this session.

Remember, you can always check the latest progress of gun bills on Colorado Ceasefire’s Gun Bills Status Page.
