The gun lobby claims that 1.67 million defensive gun uses occur each year, yet the data tell a different story. A new Everytown analysis of the National Crime Victimization Survey (2019–2023) shows defensive gun use occurs in fewer than 1% of all personal and property crimes in the United States. And victims who use a gun are 2.5 times less likely to escape an offender and 10% less likely to avoid injury than those who do not.
Check out the report to see how even though people often buy guns for defensive purposes, research proves that a firearm in the home is more likely to be involved in an avoidable tragedy.
