Another Shooting Stuns Colorado

Details continue to trickle out concerning yesterday’s shooting at Evergreen High School, in which two students were wounded and the shooter took his own life. Information regarding a motive, or where the shooter obtained the weapon he used, has yet to be released.

Colorado Ceasefire issued the following statement yesterday on both the Evergreen and Charlie Kirk shootings:

DENVER, June 5, 2025–Statement from Colorado Ceasefire Interim Executive Director Laney Sheffel, on the shootings at Evergreen High School and Utah Valley University today:

Today, we saw two more tragic examples of America’s gun violence epidemic. At least three students were shot and critically wounded at Evergreen High School in the foothills west of Denver. And, farther from home, conservative activist Charlie Kirk was shot and killed in Utah.

It goes without saying that ‘back to school’ shouldn’t mean ‘back to school shootings.’ How can a country call itself free when gun violence is the leading cause of death for American children, and speaking out publicly on political matters brings the real risk of assassination? Today offers more stark proof that in America today, no one is safe from gun violence.

In the devastating case of Evergreen High School, Colorado Ceasefire calls on our community to question how the student shooter gained access to a firearm. In a country with more guns than people, it is crucial that gun owners take the responsibility of gun ownership seriously. Securely storing firearms can prevent youth access. Securely storing firearms saves lives.

Colorado Ceasefire calls on political leaders and the courts to act in good faith to reduce the unconscionable toll of daily gun violence in America. This includes reinstating funding for community violence intervention programs and abandoning the Trump administration’s ‘guns everywhere’ agenda in favor of majority-supported, common-sense gun laws.

We pledge to fight for gun violence victims, survivors, families, and communities affected by acts of gun violence everywhere. We extend our deepest concern and sympathy to the Evergreen High School and Utah Valley University communities, the victims of the shootings, and their families.

Colorado Ceasefire will share more information on ways to support the Evergreen community in the days and weeks to come.
