State Launches New ERPO Curriculum

A new tool is available to help health professionals understand ERPOs and how they can help save lives. KMGH reported on the Office of Gun Violence Prevention’s launch of the new curriculum at the end of June. The site explains how to petition a court for an Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO), and to raise awareness around who can do so.

ERPOs are civil orders issued by a court which temporarily prevent a person from purchasing or possessing firearms. They are intended to be filed when an eligible party believes that someone in possession of a gun poses a significant risk to themselves or others. If a court grants an ERPO, the individual must surrender their guns for 14 days, and cannot purchase more. The orders can be extended for up to 364 days.

Colorado Ceasefire Legislative Action worked to help pass the state’s ERPO law in 2019, and to broaden the list of eligible parties to petition for an ERPO in 2023. Since the law’s passage, Colorado Ceasefire Outreach has held nearly 100 ERPO training workshops.
