DENVER, September 12, 2024–Colorado Ceasefire issued this statement on the executive action taken today by the Biden-Harris administration to strengthen the Violence Against Women Act and fight gender-based violence. The executive action will help keep guns out of the hands of people who have committed domestic violence by providing funding to states:
“For years, #COCeasefire has worked with the domestic violence prevention community to create and enforce life-saving firearm prohibitions for people who have committed intimate partner violence. We commend the Biden-Harris administration for this action, and especially thank President Biden for his decades of work on behalf of domestic violence victims.
“Firearms are the most common weapons used in domestic violence homicides, and the mere presence of a gun in a domestic violence situation makes it five times more likely that a woman will be killed. The nearly $700 million in funding the Biden-Harris administration is making available to states will help ensure that those convicted of domestic violence restraining orders don’t have access to firearms. This is an important step forward in the fight to save lives. We urge our state and local leaders to use these funds to make Coloradans safer where they live, work and play.”
